“DEVELOPING the FUTURE”
The “NEW” UMLA Peanut & Paperweight Programs
Peanuts (3 & 4 year olds) & Paperweights (5 & 6 year olds) play modified Lacrosse - the Peanut Division is similar to Timbit Hockey - Peanuts don’t have organized games but have controlled scrimmages with the emphasis on skills & fun - Peanut Lacrosse is “SOFT LACROSSE with the use of a soft ball than a hard India Rubber ball as in regular Lacrosse. The Paperweight Division plays organized games with minimal body contract - only Stick-Checking is permitted. Why Lacrosse??? The Lacrosse season fills the gap between Hockey & the end of school - it runs after the ice is out in Port Perry or Uxbridge arena & runs until the end of school. Famous names such as John Tavares, Wayne Gretzky, Brendan Shanahan, Gary Roberts, Sidney Crosby, Adam Foote & Joe Niewendyk, just to name a few, have all played Lacrosse & strongly advocate Lacrosse in the summer as the ultimate compliment to Hockey! Hockey players who play Lacrosse are known for their “soft hands” - John Tavares contends that much of his ability to shield & handle the puck are a direct result of playing Lacrosse – he also says that Lacrosse taught him how to properly position himself to take checks. Is Lacrosse Rough? Lacrosse, according to official Government sports statistics, has the lowest serious injury rating of all major contact sports! Lacrosse is rated 31st in serious injuries, well behind Hockey, Football, Baseball, Basketball & Soccer!!! We stagger the amount of contact the kids face - as their skills with the ball increase the level of contact increases - Peanuts will not face ANY contact other than bumping into & tripping over each other – for instance, in scrimmages, loose balls are given in a stop-game situation, with the closest player given the opportunity to scoop the ball & resume play – playing Lacrosse safely prepares kids for checking in Hockey!
When do we Play? Peanuts will place once a week on Saturday morning at 9:00 am & Paerweights will play twice per week & while we have not determined the night of the week, we expect it may be Tuesday & along with Saturday mornings.
Peanut registration fees are only $75 for the season & PAPERWEIGHT registration fees are only $125 for the season with each new Peanut or Paperweight player receiving a NEW LACROSSE STICK plus League Jersey & Shorts!
